Are Nematodes a Danger to Humans, Animals, and Plants?

When people first learn that biological pest control can involve releasing millions of microscopic roundworms into soil, the reaction is often understandable: are nematodes safe for humans, animals, and plants?


In short, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs)—commonly known as beneficial nematodes—used in biological pest control are considered safe for humans, pets, livestock, and plants. These organisms are highly specialized insect pathogens that target soil-dwelling insect pests rather than vertebrates or plant tissues, making them a valuable tool in sustainable pest management.



Are nematodes harmful to humans?

Current scientific evidence shows that entomopathogenic nematodes are not harmful to humans. They are different from parasitic nematodes that affect human health.


The most common species used in biological control, Steinernema and Heterorhabditis, are highly specialized insect pathogens. They have evolved to infect and kill specific insect larvae, not mammals. Their mode of action involves entering insect hosts and releasing symbiotic bacteria that multiply within the insect’s hemolymph (insect blood). This biological environment does not exist in humans or other warm-blooded vertebrates, including dogs, cats, birds, and livestock. As a result, they are considered a low-risk option for biological pest control.


What about pets and livestock?

Beneficial entomopathogenic nematodes are also considered safe for dogs, cats, birds, and livestock. Their biology is adapted to insect hosts, not vertebrates. Normal contact with treated soil is therefore not considered a risk to household pets or farm animals. In practical use, they can therefore be applied in gardens, lawns, orchards, and greenhouse environments where animals may be present, provided product instructions are followed.


Are they a threat to plants?

Beneficial nematodes are not plant pathogens. On the contrary, they help protect plants by reducing populations of insects that feed on roots, stems, and seedlings. It is important, however, to distinguish them from plant-parasitic nematodes, which belong to a different group and can cause significant damage to crops and ornamentals.

Beneficial nematodes, by contrast, are an established part of integrated pest management and are valued for their selectivity and environmental compatibility.


Why the confusion happens

The term “nematode” can be misleading because it refers to a very broad group of roundworms with different ecological roles. Some species are plant parasites, others are animal parasites, while many are harmless or beneficial components of soil ecosystems.


This is why context is essential: when gardeners and growers refer to beneficial nematodes, they are talking about carefully selected biological control agents that target insect pests while remaining safe for humans, animals, and plants.


Conclusion

Entomopathogenic nematodes are strictly insect-specific. Their biology makes pathogenic interactions with vertebrates or plant tissues highly unlikely, making them a safe and targeted biological control tool.
